Gupta’s academic journey continued at Daulat Ram College, Delhi University, where she pursued a Bachelor of Commerce degree. Her active involvement in student affairs led her to join the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in 1992. Demonstrating leadership and commitment, she was elected as the Secretary of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) for the 1995-1996 term and subsequently served as its President from 1996 to 1997. During her tenure, she advocated for student rights and welfare, laying the foundation for her future political career.

In 1998, Rekha Gupta married Manish Gupta, a businessman, and the couple has two children: a son, Nikunj, and a daughter, Harshita, who is an entrepreneur. Balancing her personal and professional life, Gupta ventured into business by establishing ‘Aakriti Handicraft and Events’ in 2000. This initiative aimed to provide employment opportunities to young women, reflecting her commitment to social empowerment.

Gupta’s political ascent within the BJP began earnestly in the early 2000s. She served as the Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) in Delhi from 2003 to 2004 and was later appointed as the National Secretary of BJYM from 2004 to 2006. Her dedication and organizational skills led to her election as a councillor in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) from North Pitampura ward in 2007, a position she held through re-election in 2012 and 2022. As a councillor, she focused on enhancing public amenities, including the development of libraries, parks, swimming pools, and community halls. She also initiated health check-up camps for women and children and organized awareness campaigns against child labor. Her efforts in women’s welfare were further exemplified by the launch of the “Sumedha Yojana,” a scheme designed to support economically disadvantaged female students in pursuing higher education.

In the political arena, Gupta has held several key positions within the BJP, including General Secretary of the Delhi BJP Mahila Morcha and membership in the party’s National Executive Committee. Her persistent dedication culminated in her election as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Shalimar Bagh constituency in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, where she defeated Aam Aadmi Party’s Bandana Kumari by a margin of 29,595 votes. Her victory not only signifies personal achievement but also represents the BJP’s resurgence in Delhi’s political landscape.

As she assumes the role of Delhi’s fourth woman Chief Minister, following in the footsteps of leaders like Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dikshit, Rekha Gupta brings a wealth of experience and a history of dedicated public service. Her journey from a student leader to the Chief Minister’s office underscores her unwavering commitment to societal development and empowerment. With a focus on addressing critical issues such as pollution, infrastructure development, and women’s welfare, her leadership is poised to usher in a new era of progress and inclusivity for Delhi.
